CHAPTER 20
Paul came home for supper early and came quietly into his house.
He put his arm around Emma and whispered in her ear, “I am sorry, Emma.”
Emma stood quietly for a few seconds, then shrugged off his arm and went to the cupboard.
“What do you have fixed for supper? I thought we might gather it up and go over to see Stella and Daniel’s new house and take them supper. I sent Nick home to help. Today is moving day, I guess.”
Emma did want to see the house, and quickly replied, “I fried up a batch of hamburger that would make some good sandwiches. I’ll put the cheese on it and grab some fresh vegetables. It’ll only take a few minutes.”
She didn’t really want to go with Paul, but she knew he wouldn’t notice as long as she went along with him. He even helped her carry the baskets to his pickup and closed her door.
Oh, yes, the perfect husband today, she thought as she watched the road into town.
“They aren’t moving far, just a couple of blocks, so it won’t take long for them to move. They might be done, even,” Paul said as he turned the corner to their new house.
Emma knew which house they had bought, but somehow it looked entirely different as they stopped in front. Gathering up the basket of supper, they went up the walk.
Stella came flying to the door and embraced her sister.
“Come in. Come in to our wonderful new home! Nicky, go find your dad.”
Emma handed the basket to Stella.
“I brought some sandwiches for your supper so you don’t have to take time out to fix something.”
“Thank you, Emma. We can use a break.”
“Well, first, I want to look at your house. The living room is so big. You’ll have to get more furniture,” Emma exclaimed as the sisters put their arms around each other’s waist to go into the dining room.
Daniel was coming around the corner with a box.
“I heard that,” he joked. “We’ll just sit on the floor.”
As they toured the house, Emma was genuinely happy for her sister. Stella asked Paul if he could help her while she put some dishes in the cupboard. Emma had almost pushed the thoughts of her problems out of her mind until she looked at the laundry room just outside the kitchen. Daniel was in there unpacking another box. He looked up at Emma and smiled. She smiled back and nodded her approval. Then Daniel mouthed his secret code to her. She closed her eyes and again nodded to acknowledge his love. Quickly she turned and went back into the kitchen.
“Here, let me help you,” she said, reaching for the box of dishes. “Paul, you can help carry in the last of the boxes.”
Nick came running into the kitchen and grabbed Emma’s hand and pulled her toward his room. “It’s great, isn’t it, Aunt Emma? I have room for everything.”
“Yes, it is a wonderful room. I’m sure you are anxious to move in, but I certainly will miss you.
